Code for the Responsible Advertising of Food and Beverage Products to Children

Guide for the Responsible Advertising of Food and Beverage Products to Children

(2021)

Developed by the ACA, the Canadian Beverage Association (CBA), Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada (FHCP) and Restaurants Canada, the Code and Guide for the Responsible Advertising of Food and Beverage Products to Children (the “Food and Beverage Advertising Code”) provides marketers with the information they need to advertise food and beverage products to children in a responsible manner.

The Code sets out the conditions governing responsible advertising of food and beverages to children, and is intended to expand upon the legislative, regulatory, and self-regulatory regimes that already exist in Canada. It meets or exceeds the latest Health Canada recommendations published in December 2018.

The Guide helps advertisers understand the intended scope and application of the Food and Beverage Advertising Code, and assist industry in developing advertising that is consistent with the special considerations applicable to advertising of food and beverages to children. It was also designed to be used by Advertising Standards Canada in its role as the body responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Food and Beverage Advertising Code, and the preclearance of food and beverage advertising under it.

Advertisers will be expected to comply with the guidelines by summer 2023.
