Peter Kosmala, Data Privacy Consultant, Course Developer and Instructor

Peter is a recognized thought leader in data privacy and digital media with over 20 years of international experience as a former marketer, technologist, lobbyist and association leader and as a current consultant, educator and keynote speaker. Peter helped to grow the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) from a small professional community to the world’s largest privacy association in his roles as Director of Certification, Assistant Director and then as Vice President.

Peter led the creation of the world’s first professional certification in privacy and data protection, the IAPP’s Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) in 2004. He followed this with the launch of the CIPP-Canada (CIPP/C) in 2006 as well as credentials for European data protection (CIPP/E), privacy in information technology (CIPT), privacy operations (CIPM) and a masters-level certification known today as the Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP). Presently, over 100,000 professionals globally hold one or more of the now eight different IAPP credentials which certify knowledge of global privacy laws, standards and practices.

Peter has held leadership roles at technology companies, CMGI and dataxu (now Roku); trade associations, the 4As and the NAI; and, at ad agencies, Wells Rich Greene BDDP and MVBMS Partners/EURO RSCG. He served as the first Managing Director of the US-based Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) and led the expansion of the DAA “Your Ad Choices” consumer privacy preference program. Peter formed the nucleus of the earliest digital media team at WIRED magazine and its companion venture, Hotwired, the very first ad-supported commercial Website on the Internet.

Peter has worked with leading practitioners, legislators and regulators on privacy matters in the US, Canada and Europe. He has represented organizations in technical standards bodies such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), policy forums such as the Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG) and industry lobbying coalitions such as Stop Patent Abuse Now (SPAN). In 2024, Peter was nominated for Privacy Educator of the Year (“Privacy Leader: Academia/ Thought Leadership”) by the PICCASO-Canada Privacy Awards, a juried recognition of excellence in Canadian privacy and security. He has led the development and instruction of York University’s certificate in information privacy since the program’s inception in 2020.
