Ad Standards (2020)
In 2017 Ad Standards’ Influencer Marketing Committee developed these Influencer Disclosure Guidelines to encourage effective and responsible influencer marketing disclosure practices by the ad industry. The disclosure best practices provide clarity on both accepted forms of disclosure to identify paid (in money, product, or experiences) relationships between brands and influencers and the types of relationships that can exist between these parties.
The Disclosure Guidelines cover three main groups of social media channels:
- Blogs and Microblogs
- Social Media Networks
- Video Content
Updated in 2020, the Guidelines include examples from platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. The updates also address disclosure best practices in the context of affiliate marketing and refer-a-friend programs.
